Block Island Attractions

There are many points of interest, amusements and galleries around Block Island, including two historic light houses, the North Light House, at Corn Neck Road., (tel. 401 466-3200) and the Southeast Light House in the middle of Spring Street to Mohegan Trail (tel. 401 466-5009).

The North Light House is located at Sandy Point, north end of Block Island, and close to New Shoreham. This station was established in 1829, but the present lighthouse was built in 1868, made of granite and iron with a 55 feet tower. Automated in 1956, this Light House was discontinued in 1973, but re-lighted in 1989.

Block Island Southeast Light is located at the Mohegan Bluffs, south of New Shoreham. This station is newer, established and built with brick in 1875, and deactivated in 1990, although 4 years later it was re-lighted. The height of its tower is 52 feet, making a balance with its counterpart on the north.

The Block Island Historical Society (Bridgegate Square, tel. 401 466-2481) offers permanent and special exhibits on the history of farming and maritime pasts, including original pieces of furniture and an 1850 mansard-roof farmhouse. The society's museum is located just a few minutes away from the ferry, including documents, photos, clothing and more.

Farmer's Market (tel. 401 466-2875, 401 466-3199) is particularly interesting for buying fresh vegetable and fruits directly from local farmers. This is a seasonal market running from June to September on Wednesdays at Manisses Corner (under the apple trees) and Saturdays at Negus Park, from June to October, both open from 9 am to 11 am.

Fred Benson Town Beach Pavilion (Corn Neck Road, tel. 401 466-7717) displays art exhibitions, but particularly interesting is the Annual Artists' Exhibition at Beach, a 3-hour event showing resident, seasonal and Providence-based artists, running all through June.

Other galleries and exhibitions featuring contemporary drawings, paintings, oils, prints, photography, sculpture, jewelry, and quilts are the Greenaway Photography (tel. 401 466-2122) The Lazy Fish (tel. 401 466-2990), Spring Street Gallery (tel. 401 466-5374), Mixed Media (tel. 401 466-2910) and the Jessie Edwards Studio (tel. 401 466-5314)

Dinner and entertainment mix together, attending any of the two Block Island's theatres, either The Empire Theatre, (tel 401 466-2555) or the Oceanwest Theatre, (tel. 401 466-2971). A large array of dining facilities are available through the island, including fine dining, casual dining, regional cuisine, takeout pizza and ice creams, cafes and taverns alleviating the lack of glamorous nightclubs.
